Shirin Neshat was born on March 26, 1957, in the city of Qazvin, Iran. She is an Iranian artist currently based in New York, USA. Her main areas of work include film, video, and photography, in which she explores the contrasts between Islam and Western culture, femininity and masculinity, as well as public and private life. Her works reflect the bridging of the space between antiquity and modernity. Neshat is considered a figure in contemporary art and works within the genre of socially engaged art projects. In addition to her artistic activities, she professionally engages in photography and cinematography, serving also as a film director, screenwriter, and video artist. Shirin Neshat is also known as a documentarian and an opera director.
