Biography

Serhiy Ivanovych Svetoslavsky was born on September 24, 1857, in Kyiv, then part of the Russian Empire. He emerged as a notable figure in Russian and Ukrainian visual arts during the era of the “counter-reforms” and the Silver Age. Svetoslavsky primarily worked in his native Kyiv but also spent a significant part of his life in Moscow. He was a professional painter specializing in landscapes. In addition, he gained recognition as an animal painter and caricaturist, which broadened the range of his artistic activities. Serhiy Svetoslavsky passed away on September 19, 1931, in Kyiv.
