Sergey Vasilyevich Gerasimov
Sergey Vasilyevich Gerasimov (1885–1964) was a Russian painter and teacher working in Moscow. He was a representative of the Silver Age and early Soviet decades, a proponent of socialist realism, and was honored as People's Artist of the USSR and Doctor of Art History.
Biography
Sergey Vasilyevich Gerasimov was born in 1885 in Mozhaysk. He was a Russian painter and graphic artist active during the Silver Age and the early decades of the Soviet Union. Gerasimov lived and worked in Moscow, where he became known as a proponent and ideologist of socialist realism. In addition to his work as a painter, he was a recognized educator. In 1956, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Art History and the title of professor. Sergey Vasilyevich was among the first full members of the USSR Academy of Arts. For his creative and pedagogical activities, he was awarded the title People's Artist of the USSR in 1958 and was a laureate of the Lenin Prize. He also served as chairman of the board of the Moscow Union of Soviet Artists. Gerasimov passed away on April 20, 1964, in Moscow.
