Biography

Ruy Alexandre Guerra Coelho Pereira was born on August 22, 1931, in Maputo, Mozambique. He is a Brazilian film director and actor actively involved in the development of Third Cinema. His work is closely linked with the cinematic movement known as New Brazilian Cinema, which has made a significant contribution to contemporary Brazilian film. Among his most well-known works are the films Os Cafajestes, Eréndira, The Devious Opera, Mueda, Memória e Massacre, and O Veneno da Madrugada. In addition to directing and acting, Ruy Guerra also works as a screenwriter, editor, and songwriter. He holds both Portuguese and Brazilian citizenship, reflecting the cultural ties between Portugal and Brazil present in his work. Ruy Guerra is recognized as an artist and a key figure in Brazilian cinematography.
