Russell Drysdale
Russell Drysdale (1912–1981) was an Australian artist born in Bognor Regis, known for works such as Sofala, The Drover's Wife, and The Cricketers. He won the prestigious Wynne Prize in 1947 and represented Australia at the 1954 Venice Biennale.
Biography
Sir George Russell Drysdale was born on February 7, 1912, in Bognor Regis. He was an Australian artist specializing in portraiture and closely associated with Australian culture. Among his notable works are the paintings Sofala, The Drover's Wife, The Cricketers, and West Wyalong. In 1947, Drysdale received the prestigious Wynne Prize for his painting Sofala. He represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1954. Throughout his career, he made a significant contribution to Australian art. Russell Drysdale passed away on June 29, 1981, in Sydney.
