Rosemary Karuga
Rosemary Namuli Karuga (born June 19, 1928, Meru, Kenya) was the first woman artist educated at Makerere University. In 2017, she was named Artist of the Month by the National Museums of Kenya for her contributions to visual art.
Biography
Rosemary Namuli Karuga was born on June 19, 1928, in Meru, Kenya. She was a Kenyan artist and became the first woman artist to receive formal education at Makerere University. Throughout her life and career, Rosemary Karuga was recognized as an important figure in Kenyan art. In 2017, the National Museums of Kenya named her Artist of the Month, acknowledging her contribution to the visual arts of the country. Rosemary Karuga passed away on February 9, 2021. Her life and work remain part of Kenya's cultural heritage.
