Robert Field

Biography

Robert Field was born in 1769 in London. He was an American artist active in the first half of the 19th century. Field is regarded as one of the finest American miniaturists of his era. In the early 19th century, while in Nova Scotia, he was the most professionally trained artist in the area of what is now Canada. Field's work followed the traditions of the neoclassical portrait style practiced by Henry Raeburn and Gilbert Stuart. Among his most notable works are two series of miniatures of George Washington, created at the request of Washington's wife, Martha Washington. Robert Field died on August 9, 1819, in Kingston.
