Biography

René François Ghislain Magritte was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium. He became recognized as a surrealist artist and a representative of Belgian surrealism. His artistic work encompassed numerous genres such as portrait, nude, landscape, cityscape, still life, interior, animal painting, and figure. Magritte pursued a wide range of professions including painter, graphic artist, engraver, collagist, illustrator, draftsman, photographer, sculptor, filmmaker, and architectural draftsman. Among the artist's most notable works are "The Treachery of Images," "The Empire of Light," "The Son of Man," "Time Transfixed," "Not to Be Reproduced," "The Human Condition," "The Menaced Assassin," "The Meaning of Night," "The Empty Mask," "The Portrait," "The Seducer," "The Sixteenth of September," "The Telescope," "The Listening Room," "Golconda," "Masterpiece, or Secrets of the Horizon," and "The Lovers." René Magritte died on August 15, 1967, in Schaerbeek, Belgium.
