Raden Saleh
Raden Saleh (1811–1880) was an Indonesian artist of Arab-Javanese descent from the Dutch East Indies. He was the first artist born in the East Indies and worked in Romanticism, blending European and Indonesian traditions. He was a painter, draftsman, lithographer, curator, and watercolorist.
Biography
Raden Saleh was born in 1811 in Semarang in the Dutch East Indies and died on April 23, 1880, in Bogor. He was an Indonesian artist of Arab-Javanese descent and the first European-trained artist born in the East Indies. Saleh's artistic work was significantly influenced by European Romanticism of the first half of the 19th century. His oeuvre is characterized by a fusion of European and Indonesian cultural traditions. Raden Saleh was not only a painter but also a draftsman, lithographer, watercolorist, and curator. Among his notable works are portraits of the governors-general of the Dutch East Indies, including Johannes Graaf van den Bosch, Jean Chrétien Baud, and Herman Willem Daendels. Historically, he is often regarded as a pioneer of modern art in Indonesian history.
