Qi Baishi
Qi Baishi (1864–1957) was a Chinese artist, calligrapher, and stone carving master from Xiangtan County. He was known for exemplary works in the 'flowers and birds' and 'plants and insects' genres and was acclaimed for his mastery in depicting shrimp. He received the International Peace Prize in 1956.
Biography
Qi Baishi was born on January 1, 1864, in Xiangtan County, which was part of the Qing Empire and later became part of China and the Republic of China. Throughout his life, he established himself as an artist, calligrapher, stone carving master, poet, and also practiced xylography and engaged in politics. Qi Baishi is renowned for his significant works in the genres of "flowers and birds" and "plants and insects." He gained special recognition for his skill in painting shrimp. His body of work also includes landscapes and the notable painting titled "The Palm Tree." Qi Baishi passed away on September 16, 1957, in Beijing. During his lifetime, he was connected to the Qing Empire, China, and the Republic of China. In 1956, he was awarded the International Peace Prize.
