Biography

Fahrelnissa Zeid, also known as Fakhr al-Nissa, was born on December 6, 1901, in Büyükada. She was a Turkish artist whose work incorporated elements of expressionism and modern art. Her artistic practice was connected to Turkey, Jordan, and the Ottoman Empire. Zeid combined abstraction and Western artistic influences with aspects of Islamic and Byzantine art. She employed various techniques including oil painting, watercolor, gouache, lithography, engraving, collage, and stained glass. Her body of work encompassed genres such as figurativism and portraiture. Throughout her career, Zeid worked as a painter, stained glass artist, mosaicist, lithographer, engraver, and collagist. She passed away on September 5, 1991, in Amman.
