Prince Eugen, Duke of Närke
Prince Eugen of Sweden (1865–1947), Duke of Närke, was a Swedish prince, artist, and patron. Born at Drottningholm Palace, he was the youngest son of King Oscar II, known for his landscape paintings and military service. He was a Knight of the Order of St. Andrew and the Order of the Norwegian Lion.
Biography
Prince Eugen of Sweden, full name Eugen Napoleon Nikolai, Duke of Närke, was born on August 1, 1865, at Drottningholm Palace in Sweden. He was the youngest of four sons of King Oscar II of Sweden and his wife, Sofia. Throughout his life, he was active as an artist, particularly known for his work in the landscape genre, as well as a graphic artist. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Prince Eugen was recognized as a patron and collector of art. Beyond his contributions to the arts, he also served in the military. For his accomplishments, he was awarded prestigious honors: from 1894 he was a Knight of the Order of St. Andrew, and from January 21, 1904, a Knight of the Order of the Norwegian Lion. Prince Eugen of Sweden passed away on August 17, 1947, in Hedvig Eleonora.
