Prince Charles, Count of Flanders
Prince Charles, Count of Flanders, was born on October 10, 1903, and served as Belgium’s prince regent from 1944 to 1950. He was a prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Saxony, and known also as an artist. He died in Ostend on June 1, 1983.
Biography
Prince Charles Theodore Henri Antoine Meinrad of Belgium was born on October 10, 1903, in the palace of the Marquis d'Assche. By birth, he was a prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Saxony, and Count of Flanders. From 1944 to 1950, Charles held the post of Prince Regent of Belgium, representing the monarchy at the state level. Besides his governmental duties, he was recognized as an artist. He spent his final years in Ostend, where he passed away on June 1, 1983. His life and work are closely linked to the culture and history of Belgium.
