Biography

Peter Cornelis (Piet) Mondrian was a Dutch artist born on March 7, 1872, in Amersfoort. Alongside Kandinsky and Malevich, he was one of the founders of abstract painting. Throughout his career, Mondrian worked in genres including portraiture, self-portrait, figure, landscape, still life, and allegory. His artistic legacy includes well-known works such as "Victory Boogie-Woogie," "Composition XIV," "Composition in line, second state," and "Boogie Woogie on Broadway." He was associated with artistic movements including Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, and De Stijl. Beyond painting, Mondrian was involved in interior and furniture design, and he worked as a draftsman, illustrator, etcher, ex-libris artist, watercolorist, and writer. Piet Mondrian died on February 1, 1944, in New York. His cultural affiliation was the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
