Biography

Piero di Benedetto dei Franceschini, better known as Piero della Francesca or Piero del Borgo, was born in 1415 in Sansepolcro and died there on October 12, 1492. He was an artist, mathematician, and art theorist working during the Quattrocento, the early Italian Renaissance. Piero della Francesca belonged to the Florentine school and is considered one of the significant representatives of the Early Renaissance. In his painting, he applied methods of perspective and mathematical accuracy, which were reflected both in his theoretical writings and artworks. Among his known works are the Urbino Diptych, De Prospectiva Pingendi, Saint Jerome Penitent, Virgin and Child Enthroned with Four Angels, Madonna del Parto, and the Resurrection of Christ. His oeuvre covers various themes, including religious subjects and portraits. Piero della Francesca holds an important place in art history as an artist and scholar whose legacy continues to be studied and appreciated.
