Phan Kế An
Phan Kế An (1923–2018) was a Vietnamese artist and renowned lacquer painter known for his portraits and illustrated stories. Born in Đường Lâm, he was the son of Phan Kế Toại, an advisor to Vietnam’s last emperor.
Biography
Phan Kế An, also known by the pseudonym Phan Kích, was born on March 20, 1923, in the city of Đường Lâm, Vietnam. He was an artist and acclaimed master of lacquer painting. His artistic oeuvre encompassed portrait painting and illustrated stories, also known as picture stories. Phan Kế An was the son of Phan Kế Toại (1892–1973), who held prominent positions including being the personal envoy of Tonkin under the last emperor of Vietnam, Bảo Đại, Minister of the Interior from 1945 to 1955, and Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of North Vietnam from 1955 to 1973. Phan Kế An passed away on January 21, 2018, in Hanoi, Vietnam. His contribution to national art is reflected in numerous works executed in both traditional and modern painting styles.
