Pedro Coronel
Pedro Coronel (1922–1985) was a Mexican sculptor, painter, and arts figure associated with the Ruptura generation. Born in Zacatecas, he was influenced by Mexican muralism and combined pre-Hispanic themes with abstract forms in his art.
Biography
Pedro Coronel was born on March 25, 1922, in Zacatecas, Mexico. He was a sculptor, painter, draftsman, graphic artist, and figure in the arts. His artistic training was rooted in the tradition of Mexican muralism, influenced by masters such as Diego Rivera. Throughout his work, he maintained the use of pre-Hispanic themes and color schemes. Over time, his style became more complex through the use of brighter colors and abstract forms, influenced by the artist Rufino Tamayo. Pedro Coronel was a member of the Ruptura generation, a movement that brought renewal to Mexican art in the mid-20th century. His works were exhibited and recognized in Mexico, the United States, and Europe. Pedro Coronel died on May 23, 1985, in Mexico City. Before his death, he donated his large personal art collection to the people of Mexico, which led to the opening of a museum named in his honor in Zacatecas — the Museo Pedro Coronel.
