Pavel Filonov

Biography

Pavel Nikolaevich Filonov was born on January 8, 1883, in Moscow. He was a Russian and Soviet artist, illustrator, poet, and teacher who played a prominent role in the history of the Russian avant-garde. Filonov is recognized as one of its leaders and is known as the founder, theorist, and practitioner of analytical art, a unique and reformative direction in painting and graphics during the first half of the 20th century. This movement significantly influenced the creative attitudes of many contemporary artists and writers. Throughout his life, Filonov worked in various artistic professions: he was an artist, illustrator, poet, designer, art theorist, draftsman, graphic artist, watercolorist, illuminator, and stage designer. Pavel Nikolaevich Filonov passed away on December 3, 1941, in Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad). His national and cultural identity is connected to the Russian Empire and the USSR.
