Pavel Fedotov

Biography

Pavel Andreevich Fedotov was born on June 22, 1815, in Moscow. He became a significant Russian painter and graphic artist, associated with the "natural school" and recognized as one of the leading artists of the Nicholas era in Saint Petersburg. Fedotov worked in genre painting, portraiture, and battle scenes, and was also engaged in caricature and illustration. He was an acknowledged academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts and contributed to the development of Russian realism. Fedotov's life was relatively short; he died on November 14, 1852, in Saint Petersburg. His body of work includes notable paintings such as "The Major's Courtship," which reflect important characteristics of 19th-century Russian art.
