Oswaldo Guayasamín

Biography

Oswaldo Guayasamín was born on July 6, 1919, in Quito. He was a renowned Ecuadorian painter, muralist, sculptor, and visual artist, as well as a descendant of the Quechua indigenous people. Throughout his artistic career, Guayasamín created murals, portraits, landscapes, and symbolic images in his paintings. His art reflects the culture and history of 20th-century Latin America, where he earned recognition as an outstanding master. Oswaldo was also a pupil of José Clemente Orozco, which influenced his artistic development. He maintained cultural and national connections with both Ecuador and Colombia. During his lifetime, he worked not only in painting and sculpture but also in other areas of the visual arts. Among his notable works is the piece titled "La huelga." Oswaldo Guayasamín passed away on March 10, 1999, in Baltimore.
