Oleksandr Murashko

Biography

Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Murashko was born on August 26, 1875, in Kyiv. He was a Ukrainian portrait painter, educator, and public figure. Throughout his artistic career, Murashko worked primarily in portraiture and graphics. He was a member of the Union of Russian Artists and was associated with the itinerants movement. Alongside other cultural figures, Murashko played a foundational role in establishing the Kyiv Artists' Society, which significantly influenced the development of art in the region. Additionally, he was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, where during the last months of his life, he served as rector. Beyond his work as an artist, Murashko was also engaged as a teacher and instructor in the arts. He passed away on June 14, 1919, in his native Kyiv. Throughout his life, his cultural and national associations included the Russian Empire, the Russian Republic, and the Ukrainian People's Republic.
