Nikolay Maykov

Biography

Nikolay Apollonovich Maykov was born on August 28, 1794, in Moscow. He became a prominent figure among Saint Petersburg artists of the Nicholas era and gained recognition as a Russian historical and portrait painter belonging to the Romantic Academism movement. Maykov was an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. In addition to painting, he was also an author of memoirs, demonstrating his literary skills. Nikolay Apollonovich came from a family with creative and governmental traditions: his father, Apollon Alexandrovich Maykov, was a poet and government official, and his sons—Apollon, Valerian, Vladimir, and Leonid Maykov—were known as writers. Nikolay Maykov died on August 23, 1873, in Saint Petersburg, remaining a representative of the Russian Empire in the artistic culture of his time.
