Nikolai Nikolaevich Ge (1831–1894) was a Russian painter, draftsman, sculptor, and writer during the era of the Great Reforms and counter-reforms. He was a theorist of democratic realism and a founding member of the Peredvizhniki society.
Biography
Nikolai Nikolaevich Ge was born on February 15, 1831, in Voronezh. He became a significant Russian painter and draftsman during the period of the Great Reforms and counter-reforms. Ge was also known as a sculptor and writer. In his creative work, he adhered to the theory of democratic realism. He was one of the founding members of the Peredvizhniki society, an association of artists who played an important role in the development of Russian painting. Additionally, Nikolai Nikolaevich served as a professor from 1864 to 1890 and was an adjunct member of the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1872 to 1891. In his artistic activity, Ge focused on historical painting and symbolism. Among his most notable works are "Achilles Lamenting Patroclus" and "What Is Truth?". Nikolai Nikolaevich Ge died on June 1, 1894, in Shevchenko, then part of the Russian Empire.
