Nicolò Brancaleon
Nicolò Brancaleon was a Venetian artist and architect born in 1460. Adopting Ethiopian artistic traditions during Emperor Baeda Maryam’s reign, he became known there as “Markorevos.” He died in 1526.

Nicolò Brancaleon was born in 1460 in Venice, then part of the Venetian Republic. He was professionally an artist and architect. In his creative work, Brancaleon embraced Ethiopian artistic traditions, starting from the reign of Emperor Baeda Maryam. In Ethiopia, he gained recognition under the name “Markorevos.” His work in Ethiopia represents a unique fusion of Venetian and Ethiopian artistic elements. Nicolò Brancaleon died in 1526. Thus, his life and work connect Venice and Ethiopia, reflecting the era and cultural exchanges between the two regions.
