Nicolai Abildgaard
Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard (1743–1809) was a Danish painter and a representative of Neoclassicism. Born and died in Copenhagen, he was a founding figure of the Danish national school of painting and also worked as a designer, architect, and sculptor.
Biography
Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard was born on September 11, 1743, in Copenhagen, the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark. He became known as a Danish painter and a representative of the Neoclassicism movement. Abildgaard made a significant contribution to the formation of the Danish national school of painting, being one of its founders. Besides painting, he also engaged in design, architecture, and sculpture. He worked as a university lecturer and draftsman. Among his famous works are "The Wounded Philoctetes", "The Temple of Happiness", "Culmin's Ghost Appears to his Mother", and "Ymir Suckling the Cow Audhumla". Nicolai Abildgaard lived his entire life in Copenhagen, where he died on June 4, 1809.
