Nicolae Tonitza (1886–1940) was a Romanian painter, graphic artist, lithographer, ceramic artist, journalist, and art critic, recognized as a leading figure and promoter of modernism in Romanian culture.
Biography
Nicolae Tonitza was born on April 13, 1886, in the town of Bârlad, Romania. He was a Romanian painter, graphic artist, lithographer, master of artistic ceramics, as well as a journalist and art critic. Tonitza is regarded as one of the major representatives and promoters of modernism in Romanian culture. His artistic work was associated with expressionism and post-impressionism. Additionally, Nicolae Tonitza was actively involved in several artistic associations, including Tinerimea artistică, the Arta română Society, and the Fine Arts Union. This engagement allowed him to influence the formation of artistic trends of his time. Tonitza passed away on February 27, 1940, in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
