Biography
Nela Arias-Misson was born on September 8, 1915, in Havana. She was an artist and sculptor associated with the abstract expressionism movement. Throughout her life, Arias-Misson lived and worked in Spain, Belgium, and the United States, influences that shaped her artistic style and cultural connections. She was a contemporary and friend of notable 20th-century artists such as Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Karel Appel, Walasse Ting, and Antoni Tàpies. Her works were shown at international exhibitions, and she maintained connections with many recognized figures in the art world throughout her career. Arias-Misson’s art reflects a synthesis of her experiences as a progressive and determined woman artist, uniting elements of abstract expressionism across Cuba, the USA, and Europe. She passed away on July 17, 2015, in Miami.
