Nathan Altman

Biography

Nathan Isaevich Altman was born on December 22, 1889, in the city of Vinnytsia, which was then part of the Russian Empire. He was a prominent Russian and Soviet painter and avant-garde artist affiliated with Cubism, as well as a sculptor and theatrical artist. Altman was a master of portraiture and actively worked as a theatrical decorator, designer, and stage designer. Throughout his life, he also worked as a graphic artist, collage maker, illustrator, draftsman, production designer, and figure in the visual arts. In 1968, he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR. Nathan Isaevich Altman’s career unfolded during the era of the avant-garde, connected to the cultural and national traditions of the Russian Empire, the USSR, and Russia. His creative work took place within these cultural frameworks. Altman died on December 12, 1970, in Saint Petersburg. His legacy covers a wide range of artistic fields, including painting, theatrical design, and sculpture, reflecting the diversity of talents of one of the notable representatives of the Russian and Soviet avant-garde.
