Natalia Goncharova

Biography

Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova was born on June 21, 1881, in Arkhangelskoye. She was a Russian painter and graphic artist associated with the Russian avant-garde and a principal representative of the rayonist abstract movement. Throughout her creative career, Natalia was closely connected with Mikhail Larionov, with whom she maintained a long-standing friendship and artistic collaboration. Besides painting, Goncharova worked in scenography and costume design and was an illustrator. Her artistic oeuvre also reflected futurologist tendencies. Her professional roles included artist, graphic artist, sculptor, draftsman, fashion designer, writer, arts activist, watercolorist, designer, pastelist, theatrical designer, and set decorator. Natalia identified with the cultural and national traditions of the Russian Empire, Russia, and France. She passed away on October 17, 1962, in Paris.
