Mykola Murashko

Biography

Mykola Ivanovych Murashko was born on May 20, 1844, in the city of Hlukhiv, then part of the Russian Empire. He was a Ukrainian artist, educator, and memoirist. Murashko studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he was a pupil of A. V. Prakhov. Later, he worked as a teacher at a handicraft school founded by N. A. Rigelman. Through Murashko's initiative and support from patron I. A. Tereshchenko, the Kyiv Drawing School was established, with Murashko serving as its director. Graduates of this school adhered to the principles of the Peredvizhniki movement. Mykola Ivanovych was also the uncle of the well-known portrait artist Oleksandr Murashko, who founded his own art cooperative. Mykola Ivanovych Murashko died on September 22, 1909, in Kyiv.
