Muraina Oyelami
Muraina Oyelami is a Nigerian Yoruba artist, composer, and musician born in 1940 in Iragbiji. He was among the first graduates of the Osogbo School of Art in the 1960s. He worked as a drummer and actor in Duro Ladipo's theatre and later taught traditional music and dance at Obafemi Awolowo University.
Biography
Chief Muraina Oyelami is a Nigerian artist, composer, and musician of the Yoruba people. He was born on February 21, 1940, in Iragbiji, Nigeria. He belongs to the generation of the first artists graduated from the Osogbo School of Art in the 1960s. In his youth, Oyelami worked as a drummer and actor in the theatre troupe of Duro Ladipo. From 1976 to 1987, he taught traditional music and dance at Obafemi Awolowo University. Muraina studied playing traditional drums such as dùndún and Batá. Additionally, he held an honorary status in his hometown of Iragbiji, where he was a chief. His work spans multiple spheres of art, including visual art, music, and composition.
