Mónica Briones
Mónica Angélica Briones Puccio (1950–1984) was a Chilean artist and sculptor. Her 1984 murder in Santiago is recognized as the first documented lesbophobic hate crime in Chile, which catalyzed the formation of the country's first lesbian public group.
Biography
Mónica Angélica Briones Puccio was born on July 7, 1950, in Santiago, Chile. She worked as an artist and sculptor, contributing to Chilean art culture in the second half of the 20th century. Mónica lived and created her art in Santiago, where she also passed away on July 9, 1984. Her murder during the military dictatorship in Chile is considered the first documented case of a lesbophobic hate crime in the country. This tragic event became a catalyst for the establishment of the first lesbian public group in Chile, known as Colectiva Lésbica Ayuquelén. In her memory, since 2015, Chile annually commemorates Lesbian Visibility Day on July 9.
