Michelangelo di Lodovico di Leonardo di Buonarroti Simoni, known simply as Michelangelo, was born on March 6, 1475, in the town of Caprese, which was part of the Florentine Republic at the time. He became one of the most significant figures of the High Renaissance, renowned as a sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and thinker. Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest masters of his era and is recognized as the father of Roman Baroque architecture. Throughout his life, he created numerous outstanding works, including the sculptures David, Pietà, Dying Slave, and Last Judgment; frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel; and architectural projects like St. Peter’s Basilica and the Laurentian Library. His works addressed themes of Christian art and homoeroticism. In addition to his visual art, Michelangelo was also active in poetry and writing. He passed away on February 18, 1564, in Rome, leaving behind a legacy that profoundly influenced European art and architecture.
