Michael Sittow
Michael Sittow (1459–1525) was an Estonian painter from Tallinn, a master of Early Netherlandish art. A pupil of Memling, he is recognized as one of the foremost portraitists of his time.
Biography
Michael Sittow was born in 1459 in Tallinn, Estonia. He was a master of Early Netherlandish art and represents the period of Early Netherlandish painting. In his artistic career, Sittow studied under the renowned painter Hans Memling, an experience that significantly influenced his professional development. He specialized in portraiture and is considered one of the greatest portraitists of his era. Among his notable works is the Male Portrait. Sittow lived and worked in Tallinn, where he also passed away in 1525. His artistic output is characterized by a close connection to the cultural heritage of Estonia and a significant contribution to the development of European Renaissance art.
