Meschac Gaba was born in 1961 in Cotonou, Benin. He is a versatile artist, encompassing roles as a painter, sculptor, conceptual artist, graphic designer, and photographer. His work is rooted in conceptual art and installations that explore the relationships between African and Western cultural identities and commerce. His most notable work is the "Museum of Contemporary African Art," created between 1997 and 2002. This autobiographical 12-room installation was acquired and exhibited at Tate Modern in 2013. Additionally, Gaba's works have been displayed at the Studio Museum in Harlem and at the Venice Biennale in 2003.
