Biography

Max Beckmann was born on February 27, 1884, in Leipzig, Germany. He was a German artist recognized as one of the leading masters of the interwar period in the 20th century and an outstanding portraitist. His oeuvre encompasses artistic directions such as Expressionism and New Objectivity. Beckmann’s creative legacy includes a variety of genres such as portrait, self-portrait, nude, still life, landscape, historical painting, mythological painting, animal art, interior scenes, and Christian art. In addition to painting, Max Beckmann worked as a sculptor, graphic artist, printmaker, illustrator, writer, and university teacher. Among his notable works are "Self-Portrait in Tuxedo," "Self-Portrait with Red Scarf," "Departure," and "Birds’ Hell." Max Beckmann passed away on December 27, 1950, in New York City, USA.
