Maruyama Ōkyo

Biography

Maruyama Ōkyo, born on June 12, 1733, in the Minamikuwada district of Japan, was a notable Japanese artist and a representative of the Maruyama school. Throughout his life, he created several significant works, among which "The Ghost of Oyuki," "Pine Trees in the Snow," and "Cracked Ice" stand out. In his artworks, he combined traditional Japanese techniques with realistic depictions, making him an important figure in the history of eighteenth-century Japanese visual art. Maruyama Ōkyo died on August 31, 1795, in Kyoto. His artistic legacy continues to attract the attention of researchers and art enthusiasts as an example of blending classical traditions with innovative methods in Japanese painting.
