Mark Rothko
Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was an American artist born in Daugavpils, known as a leading figure in Abstract Expressionism and a pioneer of Color Field painting. He worked as a painter, university instructor, and art figure.
Biography
Mark Rothko was born on September 25, 1903, in Daugavpils, then part of the Russian Empire. Later acquiring American citizenship, he became recognized as a prominent artist associated with both the United States and Latvia. Rothko is regarded as one of the principal representatives of Abstract Expressionism and a founding artist of Color Field painting. His artistic work belongs to the abstract art genre. Among his notable works are several paintings titled "No. 3," "No. 4," "No. 5," "No. 6 (?)," "Orange, Red, Yellow," "The Rothko Chapel," and other pieces in the "No." series. In addition to his painting career, Rothko was also active as a university teacher, draftsperson, and contributor to the arts. He passed away on February 25, 1970, in Manhattan, New York City.
