Marie of Romania

Biography

Marie Alexandra Victoria of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, known as Marie of Romania, was born on October 29, 1875, at Eastwell Park. She was the daughter of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna. Through her father, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, and through her mother, a granddaughter of Russian Emperor Alexander II. Upon marriage, Marie became the second queen of Romania. Throughout her life, she engaged in artistic activities, served as a nurse, and authored a diary. Her cultural heritage spanned Romania, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and Great Britain. Marie of Edinburgh passed away on July 18, 1938, at Peles Castle.
