Maria Sibylla Merian

Biography

Maria Sibylla Merian was born on April 2, 1647, in Frankfurt am Main. She was a German artist, engraver, book illustrator, and entomologist. In her creative work, Merian specialized in depicting flowers, fruits, and animals. Additionally, she was a botanist, lepidopterist, naturalist, and scientific illustrator. The primary national and cultural contexts in which Maria Sibylla lived and worked were the Republic of the United Provinces, Germany, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. She spent a significant part of her life in the Netherlands and died in Amsterdam on January 13, 1717. Among her notable works is "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium." Through her art and scientific activity, Merian made an important contribution to the depiction and study of nature in her time.
