Biography

Maria Vladimirovna Alyokhina was born on June 6, 1988, in Moscow. She is a Russian social activist, performance artist, and human rights advocate. Alyokhina is one of the members of the feminist punk group Pussy Riot, known for their protest actions and songs spanning genres such as hardcore punk, alternative rhythm and blues, oi!, protest songs, riot grrrl, punk rock, and trap. In addition, she co-founded the online media outlet Mediazona and the organization for the protection of prisoners’ rights, Zona Prava. Previously, Maria was a member of the art group Voina. Her activities encompass a broad range of professions including political activist, human rights advocate, poet, social figure, artist, actor, art worker, musician, and performer. Maria's cultural and national connections include the USSR, Russia, and Iceland.
