Malangatana Ngwenya

Biography

Malangatana Valente Ngwenya was born on June 6, 1936, in the Marracuene district of Mozambique. He was a multifaceted artist: painter, sculptor, poet, as well as a writer, musician, and politician. In his works and exhibitions, he often used only his first name — Malangatana. His creative activity was closely connected with the cultural identity of Mozambique. Malangatana died on January 5, 2011, in the city of Matosinhos, Portugal. His legacy remains significant in the history of African art.
