Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) was a Dutch graphic artist renowned for his lithographs and engravings exploring infinity and symmetry. He worked across various genres including landscapes, still lifes, and animal painting, and was active in multiple artistic disciplines.
Biography
Maurits Cornelis Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden, Kingdom of the Netherlands. He was a Dutch graphic artist best known for his conceptual lithographs, woodcuts, and engravings, in which he masterfully explored the plastic aspects of the concepts of infinity and symmetry, as well as the features of psychological perception of complex three-dimensional objects. Escher is considered one of the most prominent representatives of Modern-era art. His oeuvre includes diverse genres such as landscape, cityscape, still life, self-portrait, figure painting, and animal painting. Additionally, he worked in ceramic design, drawing, photography, illustration, postage stamp design, and monumental art, and was also a sculptor and lithographer. Escher lived and worked in the Kingdom of the Netherlands until his death on March 27, 1972, in Laren. Among his most famous works are "Still Life with Reflecting Sphere," "Waterfall," and "Ascending and Descending."
