Lygia Pape

Biography

Lygia Pape was born on April 7, 1927, in Nova Friburgo, Brazil. She gained recognition as an artist, sculptor, engraver, and filmmaker. Pape emerged as a central figure in the development of concrete art in Brazil. During the 1950s and 1960s, she was among the founders of Neo-Concrete art movement in Brazil, which significantly influenced the direction of contemporary art in the region. Her artistic practice spanned various disciplines including painting, sculpture, graphic art, and cinema, and she was also an active creator of installations. Pape collaborated with other significant art figures such as Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Clark. Lygia Pape passed away on May 3, 2004, in Rio de Janeiro.
