Luis Filcer

Luis Filcer (1927–2018) was a Mexican expressionist painter born in Zhytomyr. His family emigrated from Ukraine to Mexico after the Russian Revolution. Raised in Mexico City, Filcer’s work often reflected themes of social struggle and injustice.

Biography

Luis Filcer was born on December 4, 1927, in the city of Zhytomyr. His family emigrated from Ukraine to Mexico to escape persecution of Jews following the Russian Revolution. He grew up in Mexico City, where he showed an early interest in painting. Despite this passion, his family accepted his decision to become an artist only after he sold his first painting. Filcer became one of the prominent Mexican expressionist painters, creating works centered on themes of struggle and social injustice. His art shows a clear influence from the life of Vincent van Gogh. Filcer’s works have been exhibited internationally, and he gained recognition, including membership in the Mexican Plastic Arts Salon. Luis Filcer passed away on July 19, 2018.
