Lucio Fontana
Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) was an Italian painter, sculptor, designer, and theorist. Born in Rosario and died in Comabbio, he is known as an innovator of abstraction, founder of Spatialism and the concrete art movement. His works with slashes and cuts transformed the nature of the art object.
Biography
Lucio Fontana was born on February 19, 1899, in the city of Rosario. He was an Italian artist, sculptor, designer, ceramist, draftsman, and theorist whose creative work encompassed abstraction and geometric abstraction. Fontana was one of the leading figures of Spatialism and the concrete art movement. He worked in various fields of art, including as a jewelry designer and architectural draftsman. Lucio Fontana is known for his innovative technique, particularly paintings with slashes and holes that, since Malevich, transformed the character of the art object. He passed away on September 7, 1968, in Comabbio. His national and cultural affiliation includes Italy, the Kingdom of Italy, and Argentina.
