Biography
Louise Bourgeois was born on December 25, 1911, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. Of French origin, she became known as an American sculptor, painter, and graphic artist. Bourgeois worked across various genres including abstraction, figuration, and assemblage. Her artistic directions included abstract expressionism, art feminism, modernism, surrealism, and abject art. Notable works in her oeuvre include the sculpture "Maman," "Spider," and "The Welcoming Hands." Bourgeois was active in diverse art forms such as drawing, illustration, jewelry design, photography, engraving, and performance art. In addition to her artistic production, she was also a teacher, writer, and gallery owner. Louise Bourgeois died on May 31, 2010, in New York City, leaving a significant legacy within both French and American cultural domains.
