Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Biography

Lawrence Alma-Tadema was born on January 8, 1836, in Dronrijp. He was a Dutch and British artist who specialized primarily in historical painting. His work is associated with the Neopompeian style, within which he created lifelike scenes from ancient history. Alma-Tadema worked in various directions of visual arts as a painter, watercolorist, graphic artist, monumental painter, illustrator, etcher, lithographer, and draughtsman. Among the artist's most famous works are the paintings "The Roses of Heliogabalus," "Women of Amphissa," "Spring," and "Unconscious Rivals." Lawrence Alma-Tadema passed away on June 25, 1912, in Wiesbaden. Throughout his life, he lived under the jurisdiction of several states: Belgium, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
