Biography

Kuzma Sergeyevich Petrov-Vodkin was born on October 24, 1878, in Khvalynsk. He was a Russian painter and graphic artist of the Silver Age and the early Soviet decades. Throughout his professional career, he lived and worked primarily in Saint Petersburg, later known as Leningrad. Petrov-Vodkin was a representative and developer of the so-called "retrospectivist" theory circle, contributing to both art theory and the practice of painting and graphics. His artwork encompasses genres such as portraiture, still life, and graphic art. Besides his artistic pursuits, he was also a writer, playwright, set designer, and educator. His style is connected to the traditions of Russian symbolism and symbolism in general. In 1930, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR. Petrov-Vodkin lived through significant cultural transformations in Russia, encompassing the Russian Empire, RSFSR, and the USSR, and he passed away on February 15, 1939, in Saint Petersburg.
