Kees van Dongen

Biography

Kees van Dongen was born on January 26, 1877, in Delfshaven, Kingdom of the Netherlands. He is considered one of the founders of Fauvism and is associated with the Fauvist and Bridge artistic movements. His national and cultural identity is connected to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and France. Van Dongen was primarily known as an artist working in genres including portrait, still life, landscape, cityscape, nude, animal art, and figurative painting. In addition to painting, he also worked professionally as an engraver, graphic artist, lithographer, watercolorist, pastelist, illustrator, draftsman, ceramic artist, and editorial cartoonist. Notable works by Van Dongen include the paintings "Avenue du Bois" and "Stilleven met bloemen". He died on May 28, 1968, in Monte Carlo, France. Kees van Dongen was the brother of sculptor Jean van Dongen.
